Here We Are

This is my first post, my first blog. My first attempt at writing about my life in the city. Or, I should say, our life in the city. I'm a freelance editor and writer. My son is a first grader. We're on our own in New York City. Our life is wonderful. Ridiculous. Frightening. And Real.

Welcome to SIX AND THE CITY

"Sometimes I feel like I'm in the middle of the ocean, treading water, with no land in sight." Me
"You are. But remember, you're a great swimmer." My mom

It's September 18 2008 and it's just another typically quiet day in New York City. Wall Street fell apart yesterday and while we watched the news last evening (for the first time, I might add: I don't watch TV news), my son asked if I'd make "tuna fish with broccoli, like I had at daycare" for his lunch today. Oh. Okay. While Brian Williams was giving us the bad news about our completely wrecked financial system, my son was having a Proustian moment about daycare lunch from three years ago. E went on to explain that it's about making "broccoli snow" that you mix into the tuna fish. This means shaving off the little green balls (clearly the caviar of the broccoli stalk) and sprinkling them into the tuna fish. Before he left for school this morning, he asked to check my culinary handi-work. Lunchbox opened. Tuna inspected. "Good mom! It looks perfect!" At 8:00am, my day was already a complete success.

Thank God for six year old boys. They know how to put everything into proper perspective instantly.

Here is today's to do list:

  • Make PTA poster on slime green poster board asking parents to give money (never mind that half of them lost their jobs last night): use cheerful colors!
  • Call famous (and lovely) client in LA to discuss book project
  • Email client who is v. late in paying for complete rewrite--even though said rewrite is now with client's publisher (think about including picture of tired, dirty & hungry looking son as an attachment, to prompt feelings of urgency in client? or perhaps lift photo of waif from nonprofit website instead in order to protect son's identity?)
  • Go to a meeting
  • Prepare pizza dough for dinner

It's a beautiful day in New York City. Life is good. EJH

This is fantastic. Sans my own 6 year old I want to know your lives. Madeleines a.k.a. tuna and broccoli balls -- fantastic... please tell me more tomorrow... Why not? We are living in the worst of times... and the best of times... and you are chronicling it personally...thank you.

Wonderful! How you find time for this on top of freelancing and childcare I don't know. Any tips?
